AGE: 17
CANON: Tokyo Majin
CANON HISTORY: One of the first memories Tatsuma Hiyuu has is of his father’s death.
Genma Hiyuu, with his comrades Ryuuzan, Doushin, and Tougo all fought to seal away the wicked Yagyuu, a man bent on the destruction of the world. Genma sacrificed himself to give them the opportunity, and it turned out to be just enough - for the moment, at least. Then-infant Tatsuma was given into the care of an old couple who happened to live in the area out in the country, and there he was raised in a loving home. It was not without its troubles, unfortunately: Tatsuma, born under a Star of Fate, soon found he had various abilities that the other children lacked. He could jump far higher, and sense the other children even with his eyes closed. On occasion, he could even see the dead. Most of the other kids found this creepy, and it left him with a rather quiet, isolated childhood as a result.
Eventually, Tougo returned and took him on as a student, and he studied (unknowingly) the same martial arts style his father had used. When he turned seventeen, Tougo instructed him to go to Tokyo and enroll in Magami High, where he would wait until his powers were needed. He did exactly that, moving to an apartment on his own and acing the test to get in.
There, he met delinquent Kyouichi Houraiji, class president Aoi Misato, her best friend Komaki Sakurai, and the wrestling club captain Yuuya Daigo. He quickly learned then that there had been a lot of deaths in the city -- something he would find out only a few days later were all the cause of demons.
Due to a rather badly planned attempt by Yuuya to emasculate Tatsuma in a fight, the students accidentally unleashed an evil spirit in the old mansion next door to the school. Doing so happened to coincide with the Dragon Stream being tampered with by another man, Tendou Kozunu, and at that moment all of the students present (and some others - we’ll get to them later) all gained the ability to tap into the Dragon Stream’s power. For Tatsuma, this resulted in an increased strength, speed, and agility.
Still, new powers to not demon hunters make, and the demon was ultimately defeated by Hisui Kisaragi, the son of an antiques dealer with whom Aoi was familiar as well as a descendent of a long line of ninja whose duty it was to protect Tokyo. He explained the Dragon Stream to them, as well as the ramifications of their powers as far as he understood it, and promptly told them it would be best not to involve themselves.
So naturally, all five of them decided to go running out to fight demons. Frustrated with their lack of experience being liable to get them murdered, Hisui decided to allow them to join the battle against the demons, but on the condition that they all work as a team. Given Kyouichi enjoys trash talking basically anyone who isn’t Tatsuma, this led to conflict and less-than-stellar teamwork, but they stuck with it... for the most part, if only because they all converged on the same demon attacks anyway. Their demon hunts led them to battle with a demon manipulating the zombified husks of its victims, as well as others with the power of the Dragon Stream who had been corrupted by Kozunu’s influence, such as the young man Ryouichi Karasu, who gained the power alongside his friend and bandmate Raito Umon. Though they were ultimately unable to save Ryouichi due to a timely assassination by Kozunu himself, they discovered through this that the use Dark Arts were to blame for disrupting the Dragon Stream, and that whoever influenced Ryouichi (spoilers it was Kozunu) was likely to blame for all of the demons that had been summoned into the world as well.
Various other encounters with demons, corrupted users of the Dragon Stream’s power, as well as Kozunu himself cause things to heat up. At one point Aoi is targeted by a former classmate Reiji Sagaya, who not only obtained the power, but also was gifted extra abilities beyond that by an entity known only as “Chaos” on their equivalent of 2ch. Aoi, who was a huge proponent of saving the souls of any they came across no matter what, caused the others to decide to spare Reiji’s life in their rescue mission - which turned out to be a great idea, because as it would later turn out, Aoi was the Bodhisattva Eye, a person born into the world who had the ability to resurrect the dead. This being a power that Kozunu wanted as well as precisely the person Hisui’s family dedicated themselves to assassinating in order to prevent the same wars that had occurred in the past from happening once more, it immediately became a source of conflict as Hisui and Kyouichi duked it out to decide whether or not to kill or spare her, and Kozunu simply stepped in to kidnap her and put her under his hold as they distracted each other.
Not that Tatsuma was present for any of this, because he was busy ‘dating’ a girl who was really a corpse puppet sent by Kozunu to trap him. Well-aware of this because he had been the one to find her corpse during the previous battle with Ryouichi, Tatsuma fought with Kozunu right then and was anguished to find that not only was he able to save the girl, but Kozunu’s ability far outmatched his alone. Though he was able to dodge just enough to avoid death, by the time Kyouichi was able to locate and pick him up, he’d passed out from bloodloss.
Kozunu began to put his plan of resurrecting his wronged ancestors into action proper by tapping into Aoi’s power as the Bodhisattva Eye, and the kids and other fellow power users regrouped at a hospital of a spiritual healer Kyouichi knew through his connections as the Kabukicho yojimbo. Back on his feet thanks to their efforts, Tatsuma and the others set out to defeat Kozunu for good, and did exactly that with much friendship and cool martial arts. Kozunu’s hand was lost during the fight, and after rather pitifully attempting to punch Tatsuma out, he found himself dragged to the underworld by his very own ancestors because resurrecting long dead spirits with the Dark Arts is not a recommended activity for any person to engage in ever. However, given his assistant Marie Claire was similarly dragged away by evil spirits while crying out for someone by the name of Lord Yagyuu, it became clear to everyone present that they were only working for a greater power.
Cue season two, which starts off well with assassins from the Martial Fists group attempting to, well, assassinate everyone. Having already assassinated other guardians of Tokyo, they naturally targeted everyone else remaining with the ability to tap into the Dragon Stream’s power, made possible by the fact that some of the members themselves also had this ability. Those who were able to escape the onslaught, Tatsuma included, were forced to retreat behind a barrier to regroup. It was during this time that Tatsuma began to notice a strange pain in his hand, and his ability to sense one of the others in particular, Yuuya continuing to fight outside.
Yuuya and Komaki were retrieved after the initial group, and they were thus informed that Yuuya was the vessel of Byakko, giving him both the awesome and terrifying power to transform into a giant white tiger and shred apart his enemies. As he had already done this to what was once an old friend, Yuuya was understandably traumatized, and Tatsuma found himself unable to even get near to his classmate because of the very same power that allowed him to sense Yuuya’s battle earlier.
Eventually, the group was forced out into the open once more as the remaining members of the Martial Fists located them and broke the barrier. A battle ensued, and the one behind it all was revealed to be Tougo... or at least, so they thought. This “Tougo” tried to convince Tatsuma that he had been trained as an assassin, only to be found deserving of disposal when he overstepped his bounds as a tool for killing and went and made friends. This understandably messed with Tatsuma something fierce until the real Tougo returned and defeated the demon, revealing that he had originally started the Martial Fists to render judgment on those who escaped the law through wealth and connections, only for it to be used for the opposite due to Yagyuu incapacitating him for months and replacing him with a demon familiar instead. The Martial Fists disbanded, and Tatsuma had one last match with the member who was taught Tougo’s style, though he finally gave up on the fight when it became clear that Tatsuma had absolutely no bloodlust in him and therefore no desire to win.
And then there was Chaos. In a spectacularly cruel move, the boy Ryuuji Yashiro aka Chaos, gifted with the power to control anyone who used his site, sent people to kill Tatsuma’s parents solely because Tatsuma experienced life and emotions in a way that Ryuuji, a borderline sociopath, could not. The experience was enough to send Tatsuma on a roaring rampage of attempted revenge, further complicated by a strange new power causing him pain and disorientation all the while. Upon finally finding Ryuuji who taunted him with the possibility of killing his friends’ families in the same manner if Tatsuma didn’t kill him first, Tatsuma very nearly took him up on the deal - only to remember his parents’ kind words that his fists were meant to protect, leading to Tatsuma’s breakdown.
Determined to get Ryuuji to feel something, he then took Ryuuji to various places he liked, as well as places full of people affected by Chaos’ actions, such as the coroner, the asylum for those driven mad by Chaos’ power, and the site at which Tatsuma’s parents were killed. In the end, he succeeded, as Ryuuji became angry at his inability to understand just what it was Tatsuma was up to. Heartened by the fact that Ryuuji was able to experience feelings after all, he promised that next time he would get Ryuuji to laugh.
Unfortunately, this would be a difficult promise to keep because doing so awakened Ryuuji as the Yin half of the Vessel of the Golden Dragon, Koryu. Blessed with the power to tap into the Dragon Stream to an extent that no other but the Yang half could, his power became ripe for the picking by Yagyuu, who wasted no time in possessing him and wrecking the entirety of Tokyo. In the wake of the damage, it became clear that Tatsuma was the Yang half of the Vessel of the Golden Dragon, and that the strange effects of his powers was the result of his growing nearer to fully awakening to his role. However, without the presence of all of the four deities, his power was incomplete.
Despite that, the group mounted an attack on Yagyuu anyway, assisted by the members of the Martial Fist. During this time, Hisui, a repentant Marie Claire, and a mysterious foreigner Alan Cloud all awakened alongside Yuuya as Genbu, Suzaku, and Seiryuu. Though nearly everyone was slaughtered in the attempt, Aoi drew upon her power as the Bodhisattva’s Eye to resurrect them all once more. They were able to release Ryuuji from Yagyuu’s hold... though Yagyuu himself was unfortunately able to escape with Ryuuji’s power. Leaving Ryuuji in his friends’ care, Tatsuma took off after Yagyuu to continue their battle in China, thus ending the series on an epic mystery but with the generally optimistic sense that he’d one day return.
CANON PERSONALITY: Tatsuma is a truly gentle soul.
Soft-spoken and laid back, very little seems to ever faze him. Though he can be socially awkward due to his lack of experience in interacting with others, he hardly ever outright panics; indeed, most of his emotions come across as muted in general. His joys are shown through gentle smiles, and his distress through unusually solemn expressions. Where in others this could come across as coldness, as far as Tatsuma goes, it’s just the way he is. His reactions are just as quiet as his voice, but he’s no less genuine for it.
Indeed, Tatsuma is an incredibly honest person. Though his relative lack of emoting can make him hard to read, in some cases, one doesn’t even need to look that hard to see what’s bothering him. He’s a terrible liar, and he doesn’t make a habit of hiding what emotions he is experiencing at any given time. Much of his mystique exists only because his expressions make him difficult to read; once you get to know him, it’s clear through his words how he really feels. He’s seldom facetious, only ever dipping into sarcasm when playfully teasing his closer friends, and is the type of person who uses the excuse of being out buying underwear late at night to avoid both suspicion and then actually go and purchase it, because the weather is going to turn cold and his parents will need it for then.
He’s kind nearly to a fault, feeling a great empathy for those who are suffering. Multiple times during the series sees him leaving the fight to properly mourn the deaths of those who got caught up in the collateral damage whom he was unable to personally save, only rejoining after they have been laid to rest - and after his friends have taken care of the rest of the fight. He feels very strongly for others, and as time goes on, Aoi’s influence leads him to seek to save the souls of everyone he possibly can. His kindness is vast indeed, as it leads him to ultimately forgive the person who killed his parents on a whim, even seeking to teach him how to feel true joy without murdering anyone. On the other hand... his kindness is also a tempered sort. While he avoids killing for the great majority of the time, there is a single person who’s blood is on his hands: Tendou Kozunu, who is turned into a demon and who specifically seeks him out in hopes of being granted a merciful death. Tatsuma realizes this and gives him exactly what he sought.
He has a strong loyalty to anyone he befriends. Gifted at reading the emotions of others, he uses this to call them out on their lies and hypocrisy (looking at you, Kyouichi) or to assist them when they’re feeling low (such as going to visit Aoi when she needed some support). Notably, he’s never especially harsh when he does so, which Kyouichi rightly him out on. He’s the friend who will sit with you and talk about feelings. If you need someone to light a fire under your ass to get you out of a funk, he is not the friend to turn to. While he certainly won’t abandon the latter friend, he’s more likely to turn to others to handle it as they’d be able to help better than he would.
It helps that he’s a smart cookie, intelligence-wise... Though how much of this actually shows depends entirely on how much he applies himself. When given the task of enrolling in Magami high, his test scores indicate he should be one of the top students in the school. But once he’s in? He proceeds to slack off entirely, to the point of having an entire stack of remedial work to get through in order to graduate on time. He does exceptionally well at anything he’s driven to do, but without that drive, he’s content to simply let be.
Much of that drive comes from the unique circumstances of his abilities. Born with such strange powers, his foster parents made sure he knew that they were an important gift, and that he was meant to do great things with them. This was heightened when his master gave him a mission, and yet further still as he and his friends were told that they were born under specific Stars of Fate that granted them the power to do battle against demons. His destiny is a powerful force, and he is aware enough to do everything he can to meet those expectations. As he confesses to Aoi, he’s grateful for it, because it gives him a sense of purpose.
And perhaps most importantly... He loves strawberries. To nearly the point of obsession. Strawberry ramen? Check. Strawberry-patterned penguin toys? Double check. Give him strawberries or strawberry-flavored things and he’s yours.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Non-magic abilities:
-Martial arts; he uses a unique style favored by his father, Genma.
His superpowers come in a few different tiers which I am going to attempt to show in an organized format here:
Natural abilities which still come from the Dragon Stream but which he was also born with. He will need to have a connection to the Dragon Stream to get these.
-Heightened senses; he can sense and identify the people around him, even with his eyes closed.
-Spirit sight; he can see the souls of the dead, should they be present.
-Spirit communication; he can communicate with spirits, so long as they are capable of speech (spiritually or vocally). He cannot understand spirits that are too beastly or unable to communicate (such as one driven mad beyond comprehension.)
-Heightened jumping; he can jump really, really high.
Dragon Stream augmented which will require him to be able to actively tap into the Dragon Stream first.
-Super strength; comes in handy for punching things really really hard.
-Super speed; comes in handy for getting to demons really really fast.
-Super jump; because being able to leap to the rooftops of skyscrapers is very important.
-Sturdiness; prevents his body from breaking doing any of the above. Also comes in handy for tanking people cutting him open from shoulder to waist and other such injuries.
-Exorcism; if equipped with the correctly made gauntlets, he can exorcise demons by punching them.
-Death sense; he can sense those who are going to die in the next few weeks, but only if he is physically near them. He does not necessarily know what he senses about them, just that something ‘pings’ him about their presence.
-Sutra-related power; technically allows him to contribute to forming barriers and such when chanting the correct mantras or sutras, but since these are never clearly defined he’ll never regain this.
All of those exist passively, but if he decides to really activate his powers, they can be boosted even further for a short time. This is marked by red scar-like facial markings and, if he’s really going for it, pure white eyes.
Golden Dragon powers which I don’t plan to allow him to regain anyway but I’ll list them here for completionist sake.
-Vessel sense; allows him to sense the Vessels of the Four Deities if they are currently in conflict.
-Koryu’s power; turns him super saiyan with the power of the Golden Dragon. Immensely powerful, but can only be unlocked if all other Four Deities are awakened as Vessels as well so hahaha no.

AU HISTORY: Born to second generation Japanese-American parents, his mother and father were determined to not only raise their child, but continue work as usual. This resulted in constant moves from place to place as the company required, which left Tatsuma moving from school to school with little time to make friends or even really learn the ins and outs of socializing. Realizing fairly quick that trying to befriend anyone when he would be expected to move again sooner rather than later, he largely withdrew, keeping to himself during these years. The highlights of his life were trips to Recollé, where his grandparents (Katou; 迦統) lived, as those were the times when he could spend time with his family without the added issue of work getting in the way. Holidays were a treat, spent largely with his grandparents enjoying their company and being spoiled sweet with treats and lessons in pottery and oil painting, taught by his professional artist grandfather and grandmother respectively.
This lifestyle continued until he turned fifteen, at which point his family finally relocated back to Recollé. With his parents still ever-busy with work, he effectively moved in with his grandparents instead, helping them set up and take down their pieces when displayed at the Recollé Art Museum. Although assured that he would be attending Recollé high for the rest of his high school career, he more or less stuck to the same pattern he’d established in his other schools - slacking off during class and doing only the bare minimum to pass, and largely keeping to himself.
Despite that however, he has begun to make a few friends around the school and from the museum. Time will tell if they can influence him into getting his act together, however.
AU PERSONALITY: Very, very similar to his canon personality. The main difference is that this Tatsuma is not one bound by any Star of Fate, nor has he had even the suggestion of ‘something greater’ awaiting him later in life. In many ways, he’s content with this, mainly because he hasn’t known anything else. Yes, he’s currently floating through life, and yes, he has no idea where he plans to go, but it doesn’t give him any particular anxieties. He’s of the belief that he’ll find his purpose someday, and has no real drive to search for it until he stumbles upon it himself.
He is even more pacifistic than his canon counterpart, having never taken martial arts in this lifetime. Where the original Tatsuma understood that sometimes a fight was necessary (and in the case of Kozunu, a death more merciful than life), this Tatsuma has no real inclination to fight anyone and likely won’t even when pressed. Death is the furthest thing from what he wants, and killing will thus be avoided at all costs.
He loves his family unconditionally, though his relationship with his parents remains distant due to their work schedules. He doesn’t hold it against them, but there’s a gap that can’t be crossed with how often they simply... aren’t around. Thus, he confides most to his grandparents, assuming he ever feels he has anything to confide in the first place. He doesn’t so much hide pain as he simply isn’t often bothered by his circumstances enough to do anything about it.
He’s skilled with his hands, though he’s better with pottery than he is with painting. Rather than martial arts, it’s the fine arts that he’s turned to as an outlet. He’s got no interest in submitting any pieces to exhibitions, but he enjoys the crafts for what they are and the peace they give him, as well as the praise they earn from his grandparents.
His social awkwardness is not the result of strange, creepy powers, but rather his shyness when dealing with others coupled with less-than-ideal circumstances for socializing growing up. He’s still shy around people yet, but he opens up once approached well enough. The main hurdle is getting him to interact with others in the first place - once you get him talking even a little, you’ll find yourself with a friend who will be sure to keep tabs on you to ensure you’re doing alright, whether you realize it or not. And if you aren’t? He’ll do what he can in his own quiet way to help you get past it.

AU ADDENDUM
-Tatsuma's parents own a kendo dojo, of which his father is the master. Tatsuma is among the students and occasionally helps teach lower levels; he's currently sandan. However, his grandparents and their situation remain the same.
-As such he has lived in Recollé his whole life; he's simply been shy for the majority of it, and had a hard time making friends until high school.
